Don’t you just love an extra Sunday?
The long weekend couldn’t have come at a better time – it’s been a crazy week here! Starting out my copywriting business, I always expected it to be feast or famine. But so far, it’s been (happily) almost exclusively feast – the kind where there’s so much on your plate that you need a good lie down after tackling it.
So little Decs had an extra day’s daycare during the week so I could get on top of the sheer volume. He loves his new child care centre up here – which makes it so much less stressful – but after four days in a row this week instead of the usual three, he was understandably pretty tired. We’ve had our fair share of tears and tantrums.
When he’s overtired and grouchy, the only cure (apart from sleep – not an option in his super-charged little mind) is a good dose of fresh air and something new and interesting to focus on. So after a fun catch-up with an old friend and her two gorgeous girls on Sunday morning, we hit the backyard to finally set up the worm farm – something we’ve been meaning to get to for the last few months.
A big fan of all things squirmy, Decs was into his wellies in a flash and super-keen to get his hands dirty helping his Dad (or rather, letting his Dad help him) set up a home for his wriggly new friends.
First, laying out some newspaper for a base.
Then, collecting some nice cow manure-enriched soil and spreading it out.
Releasing the new tenants, picking up a few for a gentle hug… and to name them after characters from Go Jetters (his latest obsession courtesy of ABC Kids) – I wonder if a worm has ever been named Lars or Foz before?
Some snacks to get the little guys started…
…and popping the layer onto the base, covering it with a dampened earth-mat to tuck the little guys in. Good to go.
Decs was pretty pleased with himself, as he should be. I’m so grateful our tree change has given us the chance to do things like this, slowing down to work together and get our hands dirty. It’s a much calmer life for us all, and while we still have our days, we’re definitely the better for it.
With the weather up here in the mountains this morning on the cool and overcast side, I’m thinking a perfect plan for Anzac Day Monday will be rugging up on the sofa: movies, books, popcorn and cuddles with the little manski. Bliss.
So how was your long weekend? Did you take the chance to knock over some little projects you’ve been meaning to get to? Or out and about enjoying the bonus day off work?

Am sure Decs will have lots of adventures with the squiggly Go Jetters! Spent the first few hours of ANZAC day building a swing set for our little fella. Instructions say 1.5 hrs for two adults but should perhaps say 3 hours with a little boy thrown in!
